What they’re learning
Your child is learning that pushes and pulls are forces. A force can start, stop, speed up, slow down, or change the direction of an object. At home, the useful idea is to notice what changed and what caused the change.
Explain it to my child
A force is a push or a pull. When you push a toy car, it starts moving. A bigger push can make it move faster or farther. Friction from the floor can slow it down.
Try it together
Use a toy car or a small ball. Make a short starting line with tape. Try a gentle push and then a stronger push. Compare how far it travels. Then try the same push on a smooth floor and on a towel. Talk about what changed.

- Name one pull you used today.
- What can a stronger push change about a toy car’s motion?
- Why might a toy car travel less far on a towel than on a smooth floor?
- If a rolling ball changes direction after you tap it, what caused the change?
