Your child is learning that two fractions can name the same amount even when the numbers look different. The important idea is the size of the whole and how many equal parts it has been divided into.
Explain it to my child
One half and two quarters are the same amount. If we cut the same sandwich into 2 equal pieces and take 1, or cut it into 4 equal pieces and take 2, we still have the same amount of sandwich.
Try it together
Fold a sheet of paper in half and shade one half. Fold another same-sized sheet into four equal parts and shade two. Place them side by side. Repeat with 1/3 and 2/6 if comfortable.
