What they’re learning

Your child is learning to collect data, choose useful displays, interpret scales, and compare categories or values. They should make statements supported by the data.

Explain it to my child

A graph is useful when it makes a question easier to answer. Always check the title, labels, and scale before comparing bars or points.

Try it together

Track a simple measure for a week—temperature, reading minutes, or number of birds seen. Make a table and then a line or bar graph. Ask what changed most and what conclusions are reasonable.

Practice

  1. A bar graph uses intervals of 5. A bar reaches the third interval. What value is shown?
  2. Data are 2, 4, 4, 7. What value occurs most often?
  3. Why can a misleading scale make a graph hard to interpret?
  4. If 12 students chose A and 8 chose B, what is the difference?
  5. Which graph is useful for changes over time: a line graph or a pictograph?

Check understanding

  • Can your child read the scale before answering?
  • Can they explain a conclusion using actual values from the data?
