Forces acting on structures

What they’re learning

Your child is learning how forces act on structures. Four useful words are compression (squeezing), tension (stretching), torsion (twisting), and shear (parts sliding past one another). They also learn to test a structure, observe evidence, and improve a design.

Explain it to my child

Structures are always being pushed, pulled, bent, squeezed, or twisted. Engineers think about where those forces act so a structure can stay strong and stable.

Try it together

Build a small bridge from paper and two books. Test how many coins it can hold. Fold or roll the paper and test again. Ask where the paper bends, stretches, or squeezes. Change one part of the design and retest.

Practice

  1. What does compression mean?
  2. What does tension mean?
  3. Give one example of torsion.
  4. Why should you change only one design feature at a time when testing a bridge?
  5. A paper bridge bends in the middle under coins. What evidence would help you improve it?

Check understanding

  • Can your child match compression, tension, torsion, and shear to simple examples?
  • Can they explain one design change using evidence from a test?
Parent answer guide
  1. A squeezing force.

  3. Twisting a towel, opening a jar lid, or another sensible example.
    Look for twisting.
  4. It makes it easier to tell what caused the change in performance.
    This is a fair-test idea.
  5. Where it bent, how much weight it held, and what changed before failure.
    Evidence should come from the test.
