Area, surface area and volume

What they’re learning

Your child is solving more complex measurement problems involving area, surface area, and volume. They should select formulas based on what is being measured.

Explain it to my child

Volume is the space inside a 3D object. Surface area is the total area of all the outside faces.

Try it together

Use a cereal box. Measure its length, width, and height. Estimate and calculate volume, then sketch the six faces and reason about surface area.

  4. Which measures wrapping paper for a box: volume or surface area?
