What they’re learning

Your child is looking beyond single values to describe sets of data: centre, spread, clusters, gaps, and how representation affects interpretation.

Explain it to my child

Two groups can have the same average but look very different. Looking at the whole distribution tells a fuller story.

Try it together

Collect a small set of household measurements such as shoe lengths or reading times. Order the values, make a simple dot plot, and discuss centre, range, clusters, and outliers.

Practice

  1. Data 2,4,4,7,8: median?
  2. Same data: range?
  3. What is an outlier?
  4. Why can two datasets with the same mean still be different?
  5. Which display can make clusters visible: dot plot or single total?

Check understanding

  • Can your child describe more than one feature of a dataset?
  • Can they explain how an outlier may affect a summary value?
