Your child is solving simple equations while preserving equality. They should understand that whatever operation is done to one side must keep the relationship balanced.

Explain it to my child

Think of an equation like a balanced scale. If you remove 3 from one side, you must account for the same change so the balance stays true.

Try it together

Use two sides of a table as an imaginary balance. Build equations with counters and covered cups, then “undo” operations to reveal the unknown.
