What they’re learning

Your child is learning how simple electric circuits work. A complete path, an energy source, and suitable conductors allow current to flow through components such as bulbs or motors.

Explain it to my child

A circuit is a complete loop. If the loop is broken, current cannot travel around it and the bulb will not light.

Try it together

Use a low-voltage battery holder, small bulb/LED designed for the voltage, and wires only if you already have safe classroom-style materials. Otherwise draw and troubleshoot circuit diagrams. Never experiment with household mains electricity.

Practice

  1. What must a simple circuit have for current to flow?
  2. What does an open switch do?
  3. Name a common conductor.
  4. Name a common insulator.
  5. Why should household wall outlets never be used for experiments?

Check understanding

  • Can your child trace a complete circuit path?
  • Can they distinguish conductors from insulators and follow electrical safety rules?
