Forces of flight

What they’re learning

Your child is learning about forces involved in flight, commonly described as lift, weight (gravity), thrust, and drag. Flight depends on how these forces interact.

Explain it to my child

An aircraft stays in controlled flight because several forces act at once. Thrust pushes it forward, drag resists motion, lift acts upward, and weight pulls downward.

Try it together

Fold two different paper-airplane designs. Launch them from the same place with similar force. Measure distance or time aloft and connect differences to shape, drag, and lift.

  1. What force pulls an aircraft toward Earth?
  2. What force resists forward motion through air?
  3. What does thrust do?
  4. Why should paper-airplane tests use the same launch point?
  5. If a design has too much drag, what might happen?
