Our solar system and space

What they’re learning

Your child is learning about the Sun, planets, moons, and other objects in the solar system, including scale, motion, and the difference between rotation and revolution.

Explain it to my child

Earth rotates once about every day, causing day and night. Earth also revolves around the Sun over about one year.

Try it together

Use a lamp as the Sun and a ball as Earth. Rotate the ball to model day/night, then move it around the lamp to model revolution. Keep the model’s limits explicit: distances and sizes are not to scale.

  3. What object is at the centre of our solar system?
  4. Does the Moon make its own visible light?
  5. Why are scale models of the solar system challenging?

  • Can your child distinguish rotation from revolution?
