Multiplication with arrays

What they’re learning

Your child is learning that multiplication describes equal groups. An array is a tidy arrangement in rows and columns that makes those groups visible. The same array can also help them see related division facts.

Explain it to my child

Multiplication is a quick way to count equal groups. If we make 4 rows with 3 counters in each row, we have 4 groups of 3, so 4 × 3 = 12. We can also turn it around: 12 shared into 4 equal rows gives 3 in each row.

Try it together

Use coins, LEGO pieces, buttons, or cereal. Make 3 rows of 4. Count by rows, then by columns. Ask: “What multiplication facts can you see? What division facts can you see?” Rearrange the same 12 objects into a different array.

  1. Draw an array for 3 × 5. How many objects are there?
  2. There are 4 rows of 6 dots. Write a multiplication equation.
  3. 18 counters are shared into 3 equal rows. How many counters are in each row?
  4. Write two multiplication facts for an array with 2 rows and 7 columns.
  5. 24 cards are arranged in 4 equal rows. How many cards are in each row?

Check understanding

  • Can your child explain what each number means in 4 × 6 = 24?
  • Can they use one array to write a multiplication fact and a related division fact?

    Three groups of five make 15.

    Turning the array does not change the total.
