Your child is learning that soil is a mixture of mineral particles, organic matter, water, air, and living things. Different soils have different textures and properties.

Explain it to my child

Soil is not just “dirt.” It is a mixture that can include tiny rock pieces, dead plant material, water, air spaces, and living organisms.

Try it together

Put a small soil sample in a clear jar with water, shake, and let it settle. Observe layers and floating organic material. Wash hands afterward and avoid unknown/contaminated soil.
