Your child is developing multiplication and division strategies using known facts, place value, arrays, area models, and relationships between operations.

Explain it to my child

Harder multiplication can be broken into friendlier pieces. For 6 × 23, think 6 × 20 plus 6 × 3.

Try it together

Use graph paper or draw rectangles to model multiplication. Build 7 × 24 as a 7-by-20 rectangle plus a 7-by-4 rectangle. Add the partial products.
