Sound and vibrations

What they’re learning

Your child is learning that sound begins with vibrations and travels through matter. Changes in vibration can affect pitch and loudness.

Explain it to my child

Sound starts when something vibrates—moves back and forth very quickly. Those vibrations travel through air or another material to our ears.

Try it together

Stretch elastic bands of different thicknesses around a small box. Pluck them gently and compare pitch. Change tension carefully and listen again.

  1. What starts a sound?
  2. Can sound travel through solids?
  3. What usually happens to pitch when a vibrating string is shorter/tighter?
  4. Why is space mostly silent without air?
  5. What is one safe way to protect hearing?

Check understanding

  • Can your child connect sound to vibration?
  • Can they explain a change in pitch using a change in the vibrating object?
